Sargent's diary records his trip with the Salem Mechanics Mining and Trading Company on the Crescent from Salem to San Francisco by way of Cape Horn and Juan Fernandez Island. He describes the ship's unloading, San Francisco, and mining around Grass Valley and Deer Creek. He returned home as a crew member on the ships Itasca and the Prospero.
